When curing freshly poured concrete specific care needs to be taken up prevent the 'green' concrete freezing allowing the concrete to attain it's designed strength correctly. A variety of different materials can be employed to assist retain heat inside slab. Concrete frost blankets may be used to prevent surface freezing and protect the water content within the fresh slab freezing. Frost blankets are available in relatively cheap closed cell polyethylene forms and the more costly electrically heated variety. Simple things like using timber forms instead of steel can also help retain heat inside slabs.

Cold temperature concreting brings more challenges for your batching plant. Make sure that your supplier understands any project requirements so the correct usage of aggregates, mix design and transport methods are used. Low slump mixes are recommended as it quickens setting times, you may even wish to consider using accelerators that literally speed up the chemical reaction, producing more heat and quickening setting times. Some suppliers may be able to supply a heated mix dependant on where you are. In that case be sure that the concrete is laid as quickly as possible to gain the additional benefits this provides. It is recommended to keep the concrete temperature above 5 degrees Celsius before concrete has reached 5Mpa.
